What Does In-Network Mean in Health Insurance?

Definition: In-network providers are doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers who have a contract with your insurance company. Using in-network providers costs significantly less than out-of-network providers.

In-network providers are healthcare providers โ€” doctors, hospitals, clinics, labs โ€” who have a contract with your insurance company. Under this contract, they agree to accept negotiated rates for services.

When you use an in-network provider, your insurance applies your normal deductible, copay, and coinsurance. When you go out-of-network, costs are typically much higher and may not count toward your deductible or OOP max.

How to Check If a Provider Is In-Network

Important: Being in-network for your insurer is not enough โ€” they must be in-network for your specific plan. A doctor may accept Aetna but not your specific Aetna plan.
